Carmel Convent Kamarchowki

The Kamarchowki mission embarked on its journey in 1968 and was formally dedicated to St. Paul the Apostle in 1976. Initially, it housed a small Bengali medium co-educational primary school managed by the Daughters of St. Ann. Recognizing the need to enhance educational opportunities for the local Santal tribal community, an English medium school was established in 2009 under the leadership of Fr. Rodney Borneo and a committed team of lay teachers.

In 2013, Archbishop Thomas D’Souza of the Kolkata Archdiocese invited the Apostolic Carmel sisters to assume leadership of the school. Sr. Veronica Kamath and her community at Kharagpur embraced this responsibility, supported by Superior General Sr. Susheela A.C. and Provincial Superior Sr. Mirabelle. On June 20th, Sisters Lydia Pinto and Maria Lidwine from St. Mary’s community began their teaching ministry at the school. They relocated to a refurbished building on August 4th, coinciding with the feast of St. John Mary Vianney.

Recognizing the growing needs, the Archdiocese generously donated 1.24 acres of land to construct a convent and hostel for tribal girls. The new facility was blessed on July 11th, 2020. Today, the community thrives with five sisters and provides a nurturing home for 95 girls, fostering their growth and learning within a supportive environment.
