On April 1, 1956, Carmel School, initially known as St. Mary’s Carmel School, was established at 19 Deshapriya Park Road, Kolkata-26. The school began as a primary institution, offering Upper and Lower Kindergarten, as well as Classes I through IV, with English and Bengali as the mediums of instruction. Due to increasing enrolment, the need for additional classrooms prompted the relocation of Classes V and above to 41 Gariahat Road South in January 1967. By 1969, the school was officially recognized as a Higher Secondary School and was renamed Carmel High School. The first batch of Secondary students graduated in 1970.
In January 1975, the school adopted the new curriculum introduced by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education. Then, in 1996, Carmel High School was upgraded to Carmel Higher Secondary School, offering all three streams—Science, Commerce, and Arts.
The school is dedicated to serving the Catholic community in the area, while also extending its educational services to students from other communities whenever possible. Carmel High School is committed to academic excellence, skill development, and character formation, all grounded in the principles of love for God and service to others, as exemplified by Jesus Christ. The goal is to nurture well-rounded citizens who are dedicated to both God and their country.
Carmel High School is affiliated with the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education and the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education. It is a Christian institution established and managed by the Apostolic Carmel Education Society of West Bengal, under the religious jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Kolkata.
