St. Agnes Branch School at IIT Kharagpur was established on January 11, 1953, through the initiative of Prof. Gyan Chandra Ghosh, then Director of IIT Kharagpur. Prof. Ghosh, having met two of our sisters in Bangalore, proposed the idea of starting an educational institution for the children on the IIT campus. He subsequently offered a twin bungalow at a nominal rent of Rs. 100 and the use of the armory building for classes, allowing the sisters to establish a small primary school at Hijli.

Initially, the school served as a primary institution, but there was a strong desire from the IIT community to expand it to a high school. Although the sisters faced challenges in meeting this request, they managed to secure two additional rooms in early 1967 to accommodate the growing needs. By the end of 1968, there were discussions about potentially closing the school as children were transitioning to the Central School. However, this plan was abandoned in favor of expanding the existing facilities, though adding another floor proved unfeasible due to structural limitations.

In 1970, marking the centenary of the Apostolic Carmel, a Bengali primary school was established at Hijli to serve underprivileged children, utilizing classrooms that were otherwise unused in the afternoons.

Today, St. Agnes Branch School, IIT Kharagpur, continues to thrive as a nurturing institution. It provides education from Nursery to Class V and offers students ample opportunities for intellectual, social, moral, spiritual, and emotional growth.
