The Apostolic Carmel Women’s Welfare Centre was inaugurated on January 7, 1994, with the generous donation of land by Bishop Rt. Rev. Linus Gomes SJ of Baruipur and Jesuit Provincial Father Alphonse D’Souza SJ. The primary objective of the Centre was to empower socially and economically disadvantaged women, liberating them from traditional constraints and equipping them with skills for self-sufficiency and confidence. The Centre aimed to instil awareness of their dignity, rights, and responsibilities within society.
Courses offered at the Centre included tailoring, machine embroidery, machine knitting, typewriting, and spoken English. Additionally, the Centre conducted awareness classes on health and hygiene, covering topics such as maternal and child care, pre-natal and post-natal care, balanced diet, herbal medicines, food preparation, food preservation, and the status of women in India. These initiatives were designed not only to impart practical skills but also to foster a deeper understanding of health and social issues affecting women.
Through its comprehensive programs, the Apostolic Carmel Women’s Welfare Centre played a pivotal role in enhancing the lives of women in the community, providing them with tools to break free from social and economic barriers. It stood as a beacon of empowerment and education, promoting self-reliance and dignity among its beneficiaries.
