Apostolic Carmel Barrackpore

Named “Anjali,” meaning “offering,” our House served as a nurturing environment where enthusiastic novices received crucial support to discern and respond generously to God’s call. Established in response to a decision at the 1990 General Chapter for each Province to establish its own novitiate, Sr. Mirabelle, then Provincial Superior, initiated the search for suitable land near Barrackpore. Assisted by Fr. Moses Rozario, they identified a promising plot owned by Mr. Swadesh Ghosh.

Negotiations began under Sr. Mirabelle’s leadership, but her term ended before finalizing the purchase. Sr. Mabilia, the new Provincial Superior, took on the responsibility, navigating a complex process involving legalities and negotiations. On November 29, 1992, Carmel Niketan Society acquired the nearly three-acre plot through 14 separate deeds.

The land, initially a mix of paddy fields and higher ground near a main road, posed challenges such as resettling tenants and land cultivation. Construction commenced after the foundation stone was blessed on March 25, 1994, overseen by Sr. Mauritia with support from visiting sisters to ensure quality and progress.

After 17 months of dedicated effort, “Anjali” was inaugurated on August 15, 1995. The ceremony was attended by clergy, sisters from neighbouring provinces, and local dignitaries, marking a significant milestone for the Apostolic Carmel in the Eastern Province. The success of this pivotal project was celebrated with heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed to its realization.
