Carmel Ahem

Under the divine guidance and leadership of Sr. Freda, then Provincial Superior, the Apostolic Carmel was led to the picturesque land of Karbi Anglong, known as the bamboo land of Assam. Recognizing the urgent need for education among the diverse tribes here, we took steps to extend our mission. In 1986-1987, a plot of land was acquired at Malongso from Mr. Rombhi, a Karbi gentleman.

Our apostolic journey began in earnest in 1999, initially based at Carmel Convent Diphu before establishing Carmel Ahem in 2002. Our primary focus was on serving the educational needs of dropouts and tribal youth who discontinued studies after Class VIII. Through the NIOS Secondary course from the National Institute for Open Schooling, many obtained valuable certificates.

Our initiatives expanded to include TTC Primary Teachers’ Training, Computer Education, and Adult Literacy classes for women. The establishment of Carmel Hostel for tribal girls in addition to Carmel Baby Land in 2000 furthered our community outreach. Beginning in 2008, we engaged in Prison Ministry, bringing hope and support to those incarcerated.

Over time, adjustments were made to our programs; Teacher Training and Adult Literacy classes were discontinued. In 2022, a branch of our NGO, Asha Deep Trust, was inaugurated at Carmel Ahem. Its activities now include empowering women through Self Help Groups (SHGs), providing Beautician training for young girls, and offering remedial classes for children in need.

Through these endeavors, we continue to fulfil our mission, serving the marginalized and empowering communities in Karbi Anglong with dedication and compassion.
