The Apostolic Carmel presence in Bongaon was established on March 21, 1993. Located about 80 kilometers from the bustling city of Kolkata, Bongaon, or ‘Bon-Gram,’ translates to “Jungle Village,” situated near the border with Bangladesh. Initially known for its wilderness, the area was once plagued by robbers, dacoits, and wild animals.
The Salesian fathers were among the pioneers who arrived to aid the local population, who had endured harsh treatment during the partition of India. The Apostolic Carmel sisters quickly integrated into the community, engaging in various missionary activities. They educated catechists in schools and parishes, conducted prayer sessions in churches and homes, and prepared both children and adults for the sacraments of baptism, reconciliation, Holy Eucharist, and matrimony.
With a deep commitment to healing ministry, the sisters ventured out to assist the sick and distressed, offering homeopathic treatment either free or at low cost. Initially teaching in Bengali medium schools alongside their parish duties, by 1996 the sisters transitioned to running St. Joseph’s English medium school, alongside continuing their pastoral work.
The impact of the Apostolic Carmel sisters has been transformative for the Chhayghoria community. Their educational initiatives, emphasizing English education and fostering a rich array of extracurricular activities, have significantly enhanced the lives of local students. The sisters are recognized as instruments of God’s blessing, bringing about positive changes and empowering the community through their dedicated service and holistic approach to education and pastoral care.
