Carmel Convent Jakhama

In 1971, responding to an invitation from Bishop Hubert D’ Rosario S.D.B. to expand their mission within the Diocese of Dibrugarh (which then included Nagaland), the Apostolic Carmel looked beyond the tea gardens and oil fields of Assam to the Naga Hills. On February 27th of that year, Sr. Bernard, Regional Superior of North India, arrived with a dedicated group of five sisters to commence their work in Jakhama. They collaborated with the Karnataka Jesuits, particularly under the leadership of Rev. Fr. L. Castelino and Fr. Stanny Coelho, who were eager to partner with the Apostolic Carmel in educational efforts in the region.

Initially housed at Little Flower Convent Kohima as their own convent was not yet ready, the community of five sisters—Srs. Dora as Superior, along with Amicia, Roslinda, and Gertrude Maria—established themselves in Jakhama by March 3rd, 1971. Within three months, a new block on the Loyola Campus was completed, and the sisters relocated there. Fr. Stanny Coelho SJ, committed to providing better facilities, shared in the costs of constructing a new convent building, which was blessed by Bishop Abraham on October 24th, 1984.

The sisters actively support the parish of Jakhama by teaching religious instruction in the school and visiting villages such as Jakhama, Kigwema, Mima, Jakhama Town, and Mithelephe. Their presence and efforts contribute significantly to the spiritual and educational life of the local community.
