Carmel Convent, Rourkela, established through the vision of Bishop Herman Westermann SVD in 1957, marks a profound chapter in educational and community service in Rourkela. Initially founded to meet the educational needs of the rapidly developing steel town, it began humbly with a small group of Apostolic Carmel Sisters led by Mother Sylvia. Their journey started amidst challenges, celebrating their first feast in makeshift accommodations before their convent was completed in September 1957. Over the years, the convent expanded its facilities and outreach, registering as the Nirmala Nilaya Society in 1973 and continually enhancing its educational offerings. Beyond education, the sisters actively engage in church activities and community initiatives, exemplifying their commitment to holistic service. The convent’s influence extended to Jalda with land purchases for educational purposes and further expansion into Bonai in 2021, marking significant milestones in its history. Today, under the leadership of Sister Maria Cassilda Lobo, Carmel Convent continues to shine as a beacon of compassion and learning, enriching the cultural and educational landscape of Rourkela.
