Carmel Convent, Ummulong, was established on January 3, 2005, at the invitation of Lt. Archbishop Dominic Jala, SDB, DD, who sought the presence of Apostolic Carmel sisters for evangelization through education and pastoral work.
For years, there had been a deep desire among our sisters in Upper Shillong and local priests for the Apostolic Carmel to extend its mission in Meghalaya. Acting on a recommendation by Fr. Victor Lyngdoh, the current Archbishop of Shillong, Ummulong, a small town in the West Jaintia Hills District, was chosen, located 50 kilometers from Shillong.
Bishop Ferdinand Dkhar, then parish priest, and Bishop Wilbert Marwein, assistant parish priest, warmly welcomed the sisters, providing accommodation in the presbytery for five months while the convent building was being constructed.
In partnership with the diocese, the sisters engage in valuable services within the parish school and pastoral apostolate. They work closely with the parish priest to provide religious instruction to both children and adults. Additionally, the sisters travel to villages to prepare parishioners for receiving the Sacraments, attending to spiritual needs on weekends and weekdays as required.
